Welcome
Celebrating One Hundred and One Years of Service

101years.jpg

Greetings Alpha Kappa Alpha Members, Friends of Xi Kappa and Casual Visitors

One hundred and one years ago, the legacy of nine collegiate women on the campus of Howard University would be forever cemented in history. In a time of racism, inability of women to vote as well as hold certain positions in the corporate world, these nine women felt that there was a societal need to create the organization that would come to be known as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

While members rejoice at the longevity of the sisterhood that is Alpha Kappa Alpha, it is also a time to reflect on the impact that its members have had on their community as well as the world during the century of the sorority's existence. From diplomats, authors, teachers, mothers, astronauts and historians, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha have not only helped to create a living legacy in their lives, but the lives of those that they encounter everyday. Even now, as President Barack Obama is beginning his first term in office after an historic election, it is now time to think of not just his speeches and ability to connect with people, but his call to volunteerism.

As Xi Kappa Chapter looks to celebrate twenty-seven years of existence in the Summer of 2009, it is one of the chapter aims to answer President Obama's call, in giving back to our community, helping our planet and assisting others, with no regard to race, education, ethnic background, religion or finances. It is also my hope as President of Xi Kappa Chapter that the year 2009 is not just known as the 101st Anniversary of Alpha Kappa Alpha, but also as a year where all people joined together to selflessly help one another, especially in light of these tumultuous economic times. This can be achieved by volunteering in your church or community center, through recycling, donating clothing to charity, visiting shut-ins, buying "green" products or working in soup kitchens.

With that, please feel free to look at our website, which is constantly changing, and leave us any comments on our guestbook. We also can be reached via email

Thank you for visiting and have a prosperous and productive year,
Ashley Cooper
